What GI Council actually does

General Insurance Council GI Council

Statutory self-regulatory council for general and health insurance (Insurance Act s.64C, IRDAI)

The General Insurance Council (GIC) is the statutory self-regulatory body for the general, health and reinsurance industry under section 64C of the Insurance Act, 1938. Its 49 members (badge count on the council's own member page) include standalone health insurers, public-sector insurers, and reinsurance operations in India (GIC Re, Swiss Re, Lloyd's, AXA France VIE and General Re branches).

Statutory role

  • Self-regulation of the non-life industry: promoting efficiency, fair practices and public interest; advising government and IRDAI.
  • Publishes a Code of Good Insurance Practices; runs industry working groups on claims, health and co-insurance (ETASS).
  • Anchor of IRDAI's 'Insurance for All by 2047' industry-side work.

Membership (captured 2026-09-26)

  • 49 members captured from gicouncil.in's member grid (the page advertises '49 Members').
  • Composition includes general insurers, standalone health insurers (Care, Niva Bupa, ManipalCigna, Galaxy, Prudential HCL) and reinsurance branches.

Gaps & open questions

  • The member page is a JS-rendered grid (Angular) — roster requires a browser capture, which weakens reproducibility.
  • No published discipline/enforcement log; practice codes lack a dated compliance trail.
